🥇 WELCOME TO THE VINTAGE TREASURE CHEST!

450 Cards | Vintage Cube | Heavy Artifact Theme | Best-of-Magic | Est. 2021

Hi, I'm Austin. I've been playing since Mirrodin Besieged, and artifacts have been my favorite archetype ever since I began playing competitive MtG. Instead of keeping up with the cutting-edge of rapidly changing formats in recent years (cEDH, Modern, etc.), I decided to concentrate on curating my own format that combines vintage-level power with all my favorite themes. The result is a unique cube with plenty of artifacts, archetypes, nostalgia, and fun to experience. Hope you like it!

MAIN ARCHETYPES

This cube has an enormous concentration of powerful artifacts. I think this makes for an exciting cube environment since they can contribute to explosive and exciting gameplay, any style of deck can include them if needed, and each color can interact and/or hate on them in their own unique way. In addition to classic archetypes (r RDW, g Ramp, ux Control, b Reanimator, etc.), this cube supports several powerful artifact-based strategies that win through different avenues. Here they are:

  1. cw HISTORIC AGGRO - This isn't the MTGO vintage cube; aggro is viable here. Hit the ground running with a vicious steel-coated army. Takes advantage of +1/+1 counters and low-cost disruptive creatures.

  1. cu BIG MANA TINKER - The most obvious of artifact themes. Harness the best blue cards from MtG's history to bring maximum pain. Takes advantage of artifact mana, tutors, and tinker effects.

  1. cr SCRAPYARD BLAST - Turn trash to treasure by recycling your artifacts into newer, bigger monstrosities. Takes advantage of strong artifact destruction effects and a Treasure sub-theme to provide fodder for conversion.

  1. cb METALLIC COMBO - Not interested in winning through combat? Not a problem - assemble your engine and claim victory. Takes advantage of tutors and removal to stave off attackers while digging for combo pieces.

  1. cg META-BREAKER - Turn your opponents' artifact-based strategies against them by bringing the hate and ruining their plans. Takes advantage of many artifact-hosing cards and ramp effects to destroy the balance of resources.

SUPPLEMENTAL ARCHETYPES

Some powerful cards lend themselves towards certain strategies that carve out their own space within the cube. Here are the auxiliary themes you can find hidden within the list:

  1. gx LANDS - Similar to the vintage cube experience, utilize powerful land-based effects over and over again to grind your way to victory.

  1. brg SACRIFICE - Many of the existing artifact-based strategies involve sacrificing permanents; use these cards to capitalize on such effects to grow an advantage.

  1. wux EGGS - Speaking of sacrificing, if you want to go all-out on the artifact version by constantly returning your graveyard to the battlefield, consider the following:

BASIC METRICS:

Size: 450 Cards (10 seats)
Distribution: 52 Per Color, 90 Colorless, 55 Lands, 45 Multicolor
Total number of drafts to date: 0 (We're brand new, folks!)

Notable exclusions: Original Moxen / Lotus / Mishra's Workshop / Tolarian Academy / Channel (Gameplay and $ Reasons).

THANKS FOR VIEWING!

Feel free to run a draft and leave some feedback if you liked/disliked how certain cards feel in the list. Check out the blog tab to keep up to date on recent additions/cuts!

Well, I found out today that CubeCobra has a word limit on blog posts. Here's the remaining commentary from Jan '25.

c Colorless c

Colorless gets buffs to c aggro (I'll take all I can get), big ramp/reanimation/cheat-into-play targets, and pure power that I think many decks will be happy to include in their lists. Night Scythe may be too weak to last long, but I want to try it once or twice first (it used to be in the MTGO Vintage cube for a bit...but got cut). Snow cards got the axe because I was tired of explaining to people that you could use basic lands as s since I'm too cheap to buy hundreds of snow-covered basics. In the future, I want to make room for another fatty or two to support the 'unfair' strategies (Emrakul, the Promised End is near the top of that list).

t Lands t

Only a few to mention here. We gain the Dark Depths/Thespian's Stage combo, plus Restless Anchorage for an efficient (and artifact-generating) man-land. Finally, I like Fomori Vault not only as an artifact value piece, but as a discard outlet for the b/r graveyard decks as well.

x On the Bench y

This update is massive, so I want to call attention to a few cards that are on the outskirts of the list as of now and might be on the team in future updates.
