Phase II - Microsealed League Formats for 4 Players
With its resonant theme about Greek mythology and its infusion of modern design principles, Theros clicked with us as new players. I can see how veterans might have felt unenthused when it was first introduced, but we enjoyed this set a lot!
With Theros: Beyond Death, this cube has the potential for a refresh, particularly one that brings it in line with the design trends of the latter half of the Planar Cube Series: microsealed, 3-color archetypes, story-based session rules, and maybe even a few custom cards. However, I have not yet made this transition, so the set is currently in its original form, as described below.
This small cube is designed to capture the essence of the original Theros block for 2 to 6 players. I've included popular cards, based on the number of other cubes that include them and how highly they are drafted in those cubes. Although the set was not planned around specific archetypes, restricting it to a single block led to most of the strategies you'd expect to see in Theros making their way into the cube:
We've had success drafting this cube with just two players. Removing two colors cuts the set down to about the right size for a Grid Draft and forces us to dig a little deeper into each color to come up with solid strategies. Recommended!
The return to Theros in 2020 created an opportunity to revise this set. I have not done it yet, but the main change I would want to make would be to shift the archetypes over to a more flexible design, using wedges for broad themes and giving each color pair a distinct take on each of those themes.
Based on my current understanding of Theros: Beyond Death, this could look like:
