A tweaked set cube for The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth. The set is designed to provide an enhanced Commander:Legends draft experience.

The purpose of this cube is to provide a multiplayer commander draft as one or two pods (i.e. it supports between 3 to 9 players).

The cube is designed to support what I call a "Commander Legends" LOTR format in the same vein as Commander Legends 1 & 2 (Baldur's Gate) before it. This multiplayer boardgame-like experience mitigates the unbalanced nature of the retail draft in which the strongest players heavily favoured the Black and Red card pool.

The cube includes multiple dual lands (fetches/shocks/original duals - all proxied).

The number of rares, mythics and uncommons limit the pack count to 28 booster packs. This supports 4 packs per player for upto 7 players, or 3 packs per player between 8 and 9 players.

100% of the rare/mythics in the cube are seen at 7 players, 85.7% at 8 and 96.4% at 9 players.

In the commander draft we introduce two new rulings:

  1. Mono colour legendary creatures in this set each have the "Partner" mechanic.

  2. Each player picks 2 cards per booster before passing.

Note: Prismatic Pipers are also available to any player needing one if they don't find the colour/legendary creature that they need by the end of the draft. Whilst the expectation is that most people will draft two colour decks (due to the inherent strength of having two commanders over a single one), there are a few powerful commanders at three colours or more that can make for powerful and thematic decks.

Note: The prismatic pipers are not part of the cube.

  • The 640 card cube is constructed as 3c/2u/1r/1m + Lord of the Rings commander cards + 65 duals + 6 extra copies of colourless LOTR equipment (Coloured equipment amount is unaltered).
  • All nine Nazguls are included.

Note: The non-indestructible colourless equipment count has been doubled vs retail because LOTR equipment is fun to play with and also makes “Forge Anew” and voltron strategies more viable.

Note 2: The cube lists the white creature “Frodo, Sauron’s Bane” as gold due to the mixed mana activated ability.

Pack construction:

The 20 card draft packs are constructed as:

8 Commons
6 uncommons
6 rares/mythics which include the lands

Setup

There are 168 rares and mythics.
There are 168 uncommons.

  • For 3 to 7 players, set aside 4 x no. of players worth of empty cube booster packs. This is the number of boosters that will be seeded.

  • For 8 to 9 players, set aside 3 x no. of players worth of empty cube booster packs. This is the number of boosters that will be seeded.

  • Shuffle all commons and deal 8 randomly to each pack.

  • Shuffle all uncommons and deal 6 randomly to each pack.

  • Shuffle all rares/mythics and deal 6 randomly to each pack.

All commanders must be drafted from these packs (or you get a prismatic piper).
