Had three tests for THB to slot in with this update
Taranika, Akroan Veteran gives another aggressive three option, replacing Hallowed Spiritkeeper who always seemed a little too slow
Shatter the Sky is a CMC 4 wipe not really much to add. Swapping for Fumigate might be wrong as StS giving up a card to the opponent can be a definite downside compared to the life. Hoping to live the Gideon dream of protecting 2 creatures and drawing a card from the wipe.
Eidolon of Obstruction but I don't think I have the walker density to make it relevant enough. Elspeth, Sun's Nemesis
is obviously a consideration, but didn't pull one yet.
The Birth of Meletis seems like a really slow Wall of Omens that always draws a Plains. Interested in testing it but not sure if it will stick around long term.
Recruiter of the Guard comes in to help with Kiki combo, Gideon Blackblade as just an all around great card. Both White artifacts were
under-performing. Finally the another good boy joins and we get Isamaru, Hound of Konda replacing one of the W 2/1s.
Three tests for THB here as well.
Thassa's Intervention is a worse Supreme Will but I think will still be good. I think 4 CMC is the floor for it and the modality makes up for Chemister's Insight second casting. Nadir Kraken seems like a deal with me now type threat. Activating it off any draw spell will be strong and the fall back of being able to activate it just once a turn should be fine. Downside is I didn't pull near enough tentacle tokens. Laboratory Maniac comes out since outside of the win condition he generally does nothing and with Lab Jace coming in I don't know that I need both effects.
Also want to try Thassa, Deep-Dwelling but don't have one yet.
Cavalier of Gales as I have heard good things. Similarly I don't think Imprisoned in the Moon is necessary in Blue and wanted to test Gadwick, the Wizened as a body with
scalable draw. Might need to watch my spell counts but blue still has by far the least creatures.
Finally Jace, Architect of Thought out for Jace, Wielder of Mysteries still lets me access the Lab Man win condition and I felt AoT was the weakest of the Blue walkers.
Again more exciting THB tests and black gets the most changes overall.
Woe Strider was my promo and bringing in a body and being able to escape was quite good at pre-release. Even before that I was excited about the free sac outlet. Easy replacement for Flesh Carver and allows me to free up a 1 slot too and remove Viscera Seer for Knight of the Ebon Legion
Nightmare Shepard seems like it will go right in to any black deck. So many black creatures have great ETBs that getting a second mini version will be great and itself having a 4/4 flying body is no slouch. Seems especially great in a sac deck. Unfortunately that means we need to poor one out for our home girl Braids, Cabal Minion getting harder and harder for her to keep up with these new cards.
Agonizing Remorse baby Thoughtseize seems like a straight up improvement to Divest even with an extra 1 tacked on.
Eat to Extinction is the other Black card from THB I will be looking to try once I get a copy. Never got around to including Vraska's Contempt
and this seems comparable if not better
leaves to make room for Liliana, Dreadhorde General and give Black another walker option even if she is pretty formulaic. The allowed for some other swaps such as Murderous Cut coming in since it won't compete with the Fish for delve cards (though Escape might be a new problem) and Liliana's Triumph as truly a strictly better Diabolic Edict
Other power upgrades with Reanimate coming in letting us further the Villis dream with both it and Life//Death and Bitterblossom arriving in its Secret Lair splendor. Ritual of Soot I am interested in trying to give a slightly different twist to the Black wipes instead of both being -X/-X based.
Only two tests from THB here, though there are a couple other that I had as maybes.
Phoenix of Ash seems like it will be great as a hasty recursive and evasive threat. Red threes are a hard spot and Ahn-Crop Crasher seemed like the most obvious swap
Storm's Wrath is interesting as a 4 CMC pseudo red wipe. Swapping out Pyroclasm to give the aggressive decks a little more breathing room but keeping the more controlling red option open.
Was interested in
Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded but ultimately thought he won't have enough impact in my environment, though thinking of putting him in a red sneak combo package at some point and being able to swap Kiki for it. Tectonic Giant
also seems good but I didn't pull one yet and have some other red fours I want to test.
The rest of the red changes are largely side-grades that I wanted to try.
Only two THB tests here as well, with a third I considered but didn't pull and was very on the fence about anyway.
The First Iroan Games seems interesting and makes your opponent very reactive or you get paid off. Not sure it will be good, but was interesting enough to try. Noose Constrictor really didn't have a deck it was really supporting and while a fine mid-range type creature seemed an easy cut.
Wolfwillow Haven a 2 mana
acceleration that can be cashed in later. Again not sure it will be great, but piqued my interest. Rishkar, Peema Renegade was the last of the three mana ramp creatures and seemed too slow more often than not.
Vivien's Arkbow never did anything even when it was played. Finale of Devastation at least is a second tutor if not the best as compared to GSZ.
Vivien Reid and Incubation Druid seemed like good solid upgrades.
Its titan time! The THB titans look pretty interesting and wanted to try both.
Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath over Growth Spiral seems like a no-brainer. Side note, I had
Roalesk, Apex Hybrid ready to go for this spot but didn't pull the trigger fast enough
Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger does everything I want to do in Rakdos and I was already considering swapping Fireblade Artist for something since it and Judith were so Aggro/Sac focused.
Atris, Oracle of Half-Truths slips into a spot that will probably end up being for Ashiok, Nightmare Muse but I didn't pull one yet. Atris seems like some interesting spice and curious how it plays. Helps I pulled a foil.
Other MC changes are to try out some new things
Angrath's Rampage brings some flexibility and a change of pace to Dreadbore Looking to fit some more tempo in the Esper spectrum and Fallen Shinobi seems to be pulling high praise. Thought Erasure seems like it isn't need with the strong discard in mono black.
Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God my soul is Grixis
Solar Blaze gives another reason to be Boros or Jeskai control, and also gives an additional sweeper that works for the Kiki deck if needed.
Tolsimir, Friend to Wolves is pure spice. Archon of Valor's Reach is great, but with Wolfwillow Haven coming in it seems like there is a lot of incidental wolves running around.
Shadowspear is the lone THB card here. Sigiled Sword of Valeron has been good, but the equip 3 is rough. Shadowspear is cheaper all around and gives a way to get around Hexproof and Indestructible. The normal case still might be too low impact though.
Emrakul, the Promised End was gifted to me and I never feel that Precursor Golem makes it into a deck. Was very excited to get her into the cube for a try. Not sure I have enough ways to cheat her but she will be the start to building up that package.
Pretty big update and excited for the changes to the format.
