Inspired by the "Golden Era" of Magic's history, this cube was constructed to celebrate the iconic cards that enabled unique strategies, brought us unforgettable moments, helped us understand strategy, were the conduits for remarkable stories, contributed to Magic's greater culture, or acted as reliable roleplayers in competitive formats.

In essence, these are the Magic the Gathering cards.

Design Goals
  • Each card should be an iconic piece from the "Golden Age" of Magic or otherwise embody Magic's quintessential qualities.
  • While not in an attempt to replicate any one format in particular, the cube should evoke moments from formats like Legacy, Modern, and Pauper of yesteryear.
  • Using the boon cycle as a power scale, anything that comfortably sits within the range of Giant Growth - Lightning Bolt - Dark Ritual is more than welcome.
  • Mana fixing is very good, but not perfect.
Design Restrictions
  • Minimal cards that were printed after Throne of Eldraine, AKA the dawn of the FIRE Design era.
  • No cards that were printed directly to eternal formats with the purpose of artificially rotating them.
  • No "Commander bait" cards that happened to push the boundaries of power in other formats.
  • No effects that litter artifact tokens at an alarming rate.

I wasn't sure what amount of help I'd get by asking for input on r/mtgcube, but so many people came through with their thoughts to help me shape this first rough draft into something I couldn't have done on my own.

I now have what I think is a pretty decent first draft of a mainboard and lots of options to swap out from the sideboard. I'm gonna try to hold off from tinkering with it too much before I can in a couple of test drafts, but I'll be adding more to the sideboard if any more suggestions come in.

I want to especially thank u/My_compass_spins, u/Mataleon1, u/clayparson, and u/V4UGHN for their comments.
