The point of this cube is to let us (Zach and Jake, as well as some of our friends) draft and play with some pet cards that aren't viable in other formats we play. It will also hopefully become a fun draft environment with lots of interesting options as we iterate on it.
Design Goals
- Pet cards. We want to play with some specific cards that we really like. For example, Zach loves Spiritmonger and wants a cube where it's a very powerful creature, and Jake loves the simic ramp deck from an old Duels of the Planewalkers game (and specifically the cards Coiling Oracle and Simic Sky Swallower).
- No planeswalkers. We dislike how ubiquitous planeswalkers are and want an environment where they don't exist. We both enjoy them in plenty of other contexts, but they don't belong in this cube.
Archetypes
To start with, we want to support the following archetypes/strategies for each color pair:
- WU - fliers
- UB - flash/control
- UR - aristocrats aggro/burn
- RG - land-based control
- GW - enchantments
- WB - life-gain
- UR - prowess/spells matter
- BG - graveyard-oriented midrange/delirium/madness
- RW - cycling aggro
- GU - land-based ramp
Some of these archetypes are poorly-defined or unclear right now (what exactly is the difference between RG and GU?), so we'll figure those out as we make the initial list and playtest.
