This is a cube consisting only of standard-legal cards from Lorwyn through Magic: Origins. This is generally a fair environment that leans somewhat midrangey. The aggro decks often have 4 cmc curve toppers, and the control decks are often more "tap-out control" style than permission-oriented.
Why the restriction?
I started playing Magic in Lorwyn/Alara standard, and in my opinion there was a notable drop in quality around the release of Battle for Zendikar. As such, this timeframe encapsulates the sets and cards I'm personally most nostalgic for. Ending the time range after Tarkir/Origins also allows for the full set of fetchlands to be included in the cube.
Why the name Obama Cube?
The range of sets roughly aligns with Barack Obama's tenure as 44th president of the USA (minus a couple years at the end). I couldn't think of a catchier descriptor of this era of Magic, and note that this cube is not an endorsement or criticism of Obama or any other politician.
Have you considered including cards released in non-standard legal sets during this time frame?
Considered, yes. Right now I'm avoiding this though, as I worry it could dilute or distort the strategies that were standard-legal within the set time range.
