Playing with the cards from high school, and the ones I couldn’t afford back then.

Uses only black bordered, old frame cards. This means that some cards from 4th edition that you'd normally expect in this kind of cube are not here.

The environment plays around a lot with creature types and the classic tribes from this era, but tries to make that an optional strategy among others. Other things to look out for are reanimation, infinite combos, mill.

Rules Primer

Here are the main mechanics to know when playing with the cards in this list (for my own reference when teaching people how to play).

  • Several cards in the cube affect both sides. If an effect doesn't explicitly say that it is limited to your stuff, it has the same effect for all players.
  • Morph Play cards face down for 3, turn them face up at any time for their morph cost. The turn happens immediately (doesn't use the stack) but triggered abilities might trigger because of it (and will of course use the stack).
  • Protection Does four things; Prevent damage, prevent enchantments (and equipments), prevents blocking, prevents targeting.
  • Regenerate means "The next time this permanent would be destroyed this turn, it isn't. Instead tap it, remove all damage from it, and remove it from combat."
  • Bury Like 'Destroy', but can't be regenerated.
  • Cycling lets you discard the card to draw a new card. If something triggers off cycling, you first discard the card, then resolve the triggered ability, and finally draw the new card.
  • Fading - you need to remove a fade counter from the card on your upkeep, if you can’t, sacrifice the permanent.
  • Remember that there's no "damage on the stack" or manaburn anymore.
