THE GENESIS CUBE

360 cards | Includes standard sets from Magic Origins through War of the Spark

KEY INFO:
  • Strix 5: Some of the most powerful cards (Smuggler's Copter, Teferi, Hero of Dominaria, Emrakul, the Promised End) are excluded, but this cube is otherwise intended to emulate and feature the cards and archetypes of 2015-2019.
  • Moderate-quality fixing, including shock, check, pain, and fast lands.
  • The copy of Corpse Knight included is a misprint but played as written, with power and toughness 2/3.
MAIN ARCHETYPES:

Highlighted below are some of the main archetypes. These archetypes are not constrained to specific guilds (2-color combinations), and some extend across the entire color pie. Further, there are other possible archetypes, build-arounds, combos, and inter-archetypal strategies, but the intent of this summary is to give first time drafters a sense of the Genesis Cube environment.

wub CONTROL -- keep your opponent in check with efficient removal and counterspells until you find one of your big finishers.
Quench | Languish | Cleansing Nova | Ugin, the Spirit Dragon | Torrential Gearhulk | God-Eternal Kefnet

wubrg GRAVEYARD -- fill your graveyard with cards to take advantage of delerium while using (and reusing) powerful cards via recursion or reanimation. There is a Zombies tribe that supports this strategy.
Obsessive Stitcher | Grim Flayer | Sticher's Supplier | Arclight Phoenix | Deathcap Cultivator | Journey to Eternity | Bishop of Rebirth | Enigma Drake

wubrg AGGRO -- take your opponent from 20 to 0 as fast as possible using cheap creatures and burn spells.
Falkenrath Gorger | Expedition Envoy | Lightning Strike | Hazoret the Fervent | Wharf Infiltrator

g RAMP -- abuse this color's ability to generate a lot of mana to quickly play many threats or a few big ones.
Llanowar Elves | Pelakka Wurm | Gilded Lotus | Hydroid Krasis

wu FLICKER/BLINK -- flicker and bounce your creatures to dodge removal and take advantage of strong enter the battlefield (ETB) effects. Note that this deck can easily pivot into many other archetypes due to the general playability and abundance of ETB effects.
Felidar Guardian | Eerie Interlude | Exlusion Mage | Panharmonicon | Knight of Autumn | Thraben Inspector

wubr EVASIVE TEMPO -- take advantage of evasive threats and equipment. These decks have plenty of removal and interaction, which makes for a strong midrange shell.
Warkite Marauder | Aerial Responder | Snare Thopter | Captain's Claws | Baral's Expertise | Hope of Ghirapur

wbrg ARISTOCRAT AGGRO -- play creatures then sacrifice and recur them for value. Your board is far more resilient to removal and board wipes than most, but watch out for graveyard hate and exile effects.
Judith, the Scourge Diva | Dread Wanderer | Scrapheap Scrounger | Hidden Stockpile | Fireblade Artist | Blisterpod

rg STOMPY -- play powerful creatures and turn them sideways. Often, the best creatures will be resilient to removal (either with protection or by creating multiple threats). There is also a Werewolf tribe that supports this strategy.
Hazoret the Fervent | Carnage Tyrant | Steel Leaf Champion | Kessig Prowler | Rhonas the Indomitable | Arlin Kord

wubg COUNTERS -- take advantage of counters synergy (potentially infinitely) to overwhelm your opponent numerable, persistent threats. The Fabricate mechanic strongly supports this strategy.
Roalesk, Apex Predator | Shalai, Voice of Plenty | Metallic Mimic | Winding Constrictor | Rishkar, Peema Renegade | Animation Module | Walking Ballista | Hangarback Walker

ur SPELLSLINGER -- cast powerful spells while taking advantage of cast and draw triggers. This archetype can lend itself to aggressive or controlling strategies, depending on the preference of the drafter. There is also a strong Wizards tribe that supports this strategy.
Wizard's Lightning | Runaway Steam-Kin | Stormchaser Mage | Baral, Chief of Compliance | Dynavolt Tower

ubr DISCARD -- most decks discard as a cost, but this archetype tries to take advantage of that effect! Turn that cost into value using Madness or take advantage of the cards in graveyard using delerium, recursion, and other effects.
Fiery Temper | Glint-Horn Buccaneer | Heir of Falkenrath | Asylum Visitor | Wharf Infiltrator | Call the Bloodline

wubrg ARTIFACTS -- leverage synergies between artifacts to accumulate value and overwhelm your opponent. Some of these explicitly buff other artifacts, while other cards are more subtle. There are Servo and Thopter tribes that support this strategy, as well as the Fabricate mechanic.
Toolcraft Exemplar | Master Trinketeer | The Antiquities War | Weaponcraft Enthusiast | Bomat Courier | Pia and Kiran Nalaar | Oviya Pashiri, Sage Lifecrafter | Chief of the Foundry | Karn, Scion of Urza
