THE STARTER CUBE

A small evening project made with lingering bulk and a lot of free time.

Color balance was not a priority. I made this specifically as a way to play quick games of Magic between drafts and EDH. The cards are simply designed, have explanations for what they do, and should be easy enough to pick up and play for a newer player.

Mechanics include graveyard recursion, rummaging, kicker, flashback, and a little bit of scrying (as a treat).

We are using 5 basics and the enemy color pairings tap-lands(because I like those guilds more than the allied ones). The lands have the basic land typing of their colors because I am too cheap to buy the DOM United duals and like Ravnica more.

The cube was made with space in mind. Games should be able to be played with no need for dice, tokens, or any other excess materials. All you need are cards, a place to play, and a way to keep track of life.

This is also a way for newer players to practice playing Magic without needing to bring their own deck and for experienced players to hone in onboard state evaluation and thinking ahead. Although things won't get too complex, I hope that the experience will still be fun.

Have fun with it, and as always advice and feedback are appreciated.

RULES

  • One deck of 60 nonlands is used. Both players draw from the same deck. Graveyards and exile zones are still separate from one another.

  • Players are given ten lands, one of each basic and one of each tapped enemy dual land. During their turn, a player may play one these lands.

  • Players start at 20 life.

  • Both players draw a hand of 4. No mulligans.

"Practice, recruit. Before you can lead armies, before you can truly join our ranks, you must practice. Now take a moment, steady your blade, and try again."
-Tajic, to Mileva, Warden of the Tenth
