Welcome to the Cubroling!

This cube is designed to be a lower-powered environment, roughly close in power level to a strong masters set. It is meant to give an enjoyable drafting experience to any level of Magic player and showcase some of the most iconic draft staples of all time.

The name comes from my first version of this cube, where it was heavily focused around Saprolings, creating the name by combining the words Saproling + Cube. The Cube has evolved and changed a lot since then, and sadly now contains no cards that create Saprolings!

Design Goals & Limitations
  • No Shuffling - In this Cube, there are no cards that shuffle. This is because shuffling interrupts the flow of the game and slows down play, making the game much less enjoyable to play. Hence, no cards that shuffle or take a long time to resolve are included.
  • No High Variance Cards - I have tried to remove most of the cards in this cube that result in high variance when played. For example, cards with the dice rolling mechanic, like Delina, or cards that can result in getting very strong or very weak value off of one card like Winding Way.
    • Currently I run one card that I would consider high variance, Bloodbraid Elf.
  • Other Banned Keywords - I also ban cards with the following keywords: Banding, Fear, Intimidate, Landwalk, Protection from Color, and Regenerate. This is to both reduce complexity in individual cards, and to make sure there is ample room for interactivity.
  • Make Drafting Interesting - My goal is to have most of the cards in this cube fit into different decks and archetypes, allowing for unique strategies and decks to arise. To this end, archetypes are much more loosely defined.
  • Play with Fun or Interesting Cards - One of the greatest aspects of cube is getting to play with Magic's "Greatest Hits" - playing with cards like Cryptic Command, Flametongue Kavu, or Snapcaster Mage.
  • Show off Cards from my Collection - There are a number of cards in this cube that I am particularly proud of, having interesting stories of how they were acquired, altered, or signed.

Functionally Altered Cards

In this cube, there are a few cards that have been functionally altered to either make things easier, complete cycles that Wizards doesn't want to, or to make Tibalt playable. Currently, the following cards have been changed:

  • Completed Triome Cycle - The cycle of Triomes, like Indatha Triome, has been completed to feature all shards and wedges.
  • Icehide Golem - Changed to require mana from basic lands to cast rather than mana from snow permanents. This essentially makes all basics in my cube snow without having to replace them all for one card.
  • Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded - First ability changed to the following: +1: Discard a card. If you do, draw a card.
