  • What is Colorless?
  1. I went through many iterations before settling on my current philosophy. My first inclination was enforcing colorless color
identity. This was colorless in its purest form. I quickly decided that this was TOO restrictive, and decided to break color
identity but maintain the colorless restriction. This allowed me to expand some themes such as Myr synergy and the shard
cycle. I was initially against phyrexian mana, but many of the phyrexian mana cards allowed for things that were otherwise
virtually impossible in colorless. Ex: birthing pod, mutagenic growth, and dismember. I decided allowing phyrexian mana would
enhance and expand the existing themes without taking away from the colorless “feel” of the cube.
  2. I experimented with adding some cards/mechanics that require colored mana such as sunburst, devoid, and activated abilities
like Academy Ruins. I quickly realized that while these cards have merit, they introduced “color dependence”. I found myself
drafting these powerful cards, which would force me to draft fixing/color sources to make them playable. While this is a valid
approach for any other cube, I felt that it defeated the purpose of the colorless cube. I decided that gaining incidental
value off of having colors was acceptable, as long as it didn’t force players to draft color sources to make them playable.
Ex: Gust-Skimmer is a redundant Bronze Sable, but it becomes better if you happen to have access to blue mana.
  • Notes:
  1. UN-cards - I decided to add some un-cards to increase power level. I didn’t want to get carried away with this, so I only
included cards that enhanced or expanded existing themes. This includes aggressively costed cards such as Togglodyte, Super
    Secret Tech, and Jack-in-the-Mox
  2. Power/Timevault - The first draft of this cube included power, but I quickly realized these cards prevented fair cards from
keeping up. I don’t think this is the right environment for power, but I may revisit this in the future.
  3. Lands/Conspiracies - Lands have the characteristic of improving a deck without taking up a “slot”. In most cubes, this mostly
comes in the form of fixing. Since this cube doesn’t have colors, utility lands and manlands take their place. Conspiracies
    fill a similar role.
  4. Power Level - Being colorless is a relatively huge restriction. What this means is the power level of this cube will be lower
than many “normal” cubes. What I usually expect is that colorless cards are about 1 turn slower than their colored
counterparts. Ex: board sweepers are turn 5, Llanowar Elves and Savanna Lions are 2 mana, and Phyrexian Arena is 4 mana.
