A developing Kamigawa block cube, accompanying the Clock Spinning podcast.

On Clock Spinning, we're reviewing every card in the original Kamigawa block card-by-card, to share interesting stories, talk about playablity, and ultimately build a cube that showcases the best of the block. Find links to listen in on clockspinning.com.

This cube follows Magic rules as they were in 2005. Notably, that means:

  • Damage on the stack, which means that combat damage goes on the stack, then players may use instant-speed effects before damage is dealt. This rule is critical to the cube. It increases the power of the many sacrifice effects like Frostling and Blood Rites. It creates game-deciding 3-for-1s off cards like Rootrunner. And it adds texture and a bit of extra playability for any number of weaker cards like Phantom Wings.
  • The CHK "Legend rule", which means that if there are multiple legends with the same name on other side of the battlefield, all of them die. Our cube doubles up on some legends, notably aggressive creatures (like Isamaru, Hound of Konda) and the various Hondens. Outside of the Hondens, this rule rarely affects play, but including it helps create an authentic 2005 feel.
  • Mana burn, which means that players lose 1 life for each unspent mana at the end of phases. This almost never comes up in play, but it's again good 2005 flavor.
