"The darkness always teemed with unexplained sound—and yet he sometimes shook with fear lest the noises he heard should subside and allow him to hear certain other, fainter noises"
H.P. Lovecraft, The Dreams in the Witch House
A letter from the other side,
Some years ago, as many who would be reading this did, I began to play magic, and few things have enraptured me as well as the plane of Innistrad. As time has gone on I've appreciated Magic's other forays into horror and fear. This experiment is not a faithful reproduction of any Innistrad or other limited environment, but a selection of spine-tingling cards that appeal to me. My cube is an homage as much as an imitation, a testimonial regarding hundreds of hours of obsession with the gothic and macabre. It is a celebration of horror, nostalgia, and the beloved tortured thing that bumps in the night. It is a love letter to my Innistrad, and a love letter to magic's horror.
This cube is built around 10 masters style two color archetypes, though there is a goodly amount of overlap. There are the classic monster tribes, and of course the humans to die and slay and struggle against them, but foremost this is an environment obsessed with the graveyard. Flashback, self mill, reanimation, and bunches of different ways to make death matter suffuse this house like mold through its walls.
Archetypes
Humans must stand together to survive the night (+1/+1 counters, Humans, Coven)
Rot and Burn! (Madness, delirium, aggression)
Only one of us is getting out alive (Sacrifice, aggression)
Master the grave with your undead minions (Zombies, Sacrifice, Grave as Resource)
Dreams from the other side (Disturb, Enchantments)
Together forever (tokens, death triggers)
An empty grave craves to be filled (Delirium, Graveyard size)
Secrets lay beneath the earth (flashback, off color, leaves graveyard)
The mad scientist pursues forbidden magic (Instant & Sorcery matters, Flashback)
Gather your forces at dusk to see the dawn (Aggro)
Errata: werewolves with the old transformation mechanic of casting two spells now use daybound//nightbound
A note on organization: off color flashback/activated abilities are not generally considered for the purposes of color organization. Just think of it as extra value for playing the cards in the right color combo. Color balancing that drove me a little crazy and ended up not being worth it for me.
As always, this is a continuous work in progress and any feedback is welcome. This cube was originally a "A love letter to Innistrad" focused entirely around Innistrad's gothic horror, until I was entirely smitten with the coming of Duskmourn. As a result I have broken free from the planar shackles and now have found freedom in the walls of every haunted house across the multiverse.
Self discard theme was unexpected but welcome. My hot take is the main set art is much more atmospheric much of the time. There's a number of really interesting options that I'm throwing in the maybeboard for now.
I also want to try out this new half cycle of lands that are like if the clue lands and the surveil lands had a baby. Realistically I probably need to find ten cuts and just put both cycles in since I need more lands, but that's a project for later, possibly when the cycle is completed.
