Drafting Guide

This cube was built to support the legendary creatures from the D&D themed sets. It focuses on enemy guild pairings to support these strategies, which do require some hoop jumping.

(W/B) Assemble Your Party - With Nalia de'Arnise as the guiding star, many of these creatures in these two colors come with the types required to build a party. However, one card, Nalia cannot be keystone to this coming together. One common things between many of these card types is token creation, so this these colors lean into aristocrat themes. White gaining tons of life for putting creatures on the board and black looking for ways to exploit their presence.

(W/R) Calculate Your Move Economy - You don't have to be a power gamer to appreciate the simple math of move economy. Duke Ulder Ravenguard knows this is the way to a swift victory. He and his compatriots want you to make the most out of your combat step, so these colors come ready to punish those who stand in your way with hasty creatures, tokens, first strike and other tricks to help you prevail in combat.

(U/R) The Dragon Wizard Casts Spit Fire - Firkraag, Cunning Instigator and Lozhan, Dragons' Legacy both want to see dragons hit the board, so let's oblige them. However, blue isn't chock full of dragons, but it is full of ways to pump out copies. This strategy looks to play like a spellslinger, filling your hand with options to try to assemble a combo that either clones up your dragons or bring in Shapeshifters that can play the part.

(U/G) Help Volo Write His Guide - Volo in both his forms ((Volo, Guide to Monsters/Volo, Itinerant Scholar) wants you to catalog creature types, so this color combo seeks to give you many options. The focus on copying and polymorphing creatures means you will see very few creatures of the same type. To help you find the creatures you need, several cards work to give you visibility around your future draws, so you can also plan for the perfect time to part ways with the druid in the party and enlist a giant fungal companion instead.

(B/G) Betray Your Friends, Then Keep Them as Pets - Okay, okay, okay, so your Zombie army wasn't really all that willing to begin with, but with a little nudge Baba Lysaga, Night Witch and her friends can use their sacrifice to eek out card advantage and plan for the day they rise again. These colors seek create a swarm of tokens that can be used to sacrifice for powerful effects or simply to reanimate a massive threat.

About the Cube

This cube is the product of a gift I received from a friend moving out of town. He had enjoyed our cube nights at a bar and entrusted me with a part of his collection (it was extremely generous of him), saying he hoped I would put it to use. While it is not DONE, done, I hope to give him the chance to give it a shot before he sets out on his next adventure.

As I dug through the collection, one thing that I enjoyed, which felt powerful, but not overwhelming was the DND themed multicolor cards, generally legendaries. Those cards were the jumping off point. In order to support the somewhat broad and hoop-jumping strategies, the core 360 is really built around enemy guild pairings, that function fairly similar to normal guild strategies.

Other Notes

  • I know there are many D&D themed cards left out, but my goal was to work around these commanders, while keeping the mechanics fairly approachable for newbies and the card power level somewhat restrained.
  • In general, I try to avoid commander only cards that support a strategy, because they feel too powerful to me in a two-player match.
