Overview

The Alpha Reimagined cube is an attempt to capture Alpha's "Magic as Richard Garfield intended" feel while making improvements by incorporating design lessons learned over the course of Magic's history. What does that mean specifically?

What's still here:
  • 47 of the original 302 cards from Alpha/Beta.
  • Iconic cards like Serra Angel and Shivan Dragon as some of the most powerful creatures.
  • Cards which try to capture a single resonant fantasy concept like a wish-granting genie or a deal with the devil.
  • Simple card designs with little text and no non-evergreen keywords.
  • Game-warping symmetric effects that would never be printed today like Armageddon and Winter Orb.
  • A conspicuous obsession with walls, auras, lifegain, and color-hosers.
  • A consistent visual design reminiscent of a booster pack. (All cards are in the M15 frame.)
  • A very sparing use of tokens and counters.
What's new: What's gone:
  • Extreme power outliers that are far too strong like Ancestral Recall or are far too weak like Wanderlust.
  • Expensive creatures with massive downsides like Lord of the Pit and Force of Nature. (The creature costing 6+ mana is enough of a cost.)
  • Completely vanilla creatures like Gray Ogre which don't lead to much depth of play.
