Everyone knows that Magic design peaked during Invasion and Odessey blocks (/s). Kicker, flashblack, and threshold keep getting reinvented but few have bested the classics. Combat keywords have certainly improved over the years though.
This is intended mostly as filler I can use for other cube designs, however it can be played as a "noob cube". This should:
--> Be simple iconic cards, example:
giant growth
merfolk looter
serra angel
demonic tutor
--> Focus on Combat Keywords
first strike
flying
haste
flash
trample
deathtouch
lifelink
menace
ward
--> Introduce forms of removal.
destroy
exile
bounce
burn
stun/freeze
edicts
--> Introduce cost reduction/addition:
Convoke and Kicker
--> Some graveyard abilities
Threshold and Flashback
--> Card types should matter and overlap to some degree such that broken wings is playable.
Keep the cards simple with little to no rider text. Furthermore, no planeswalkers or mention of planeswalkers should be on the card.
With that being said, Magic is a complex game. Even while keeping things to the basics, this list is quite complicated for newer players, but allows a lot of replayability. Skilled players will note the combos in the cube including:
Reanimator
thopter foundry + sword of the meek
Gifts Ungiven packages, which include the above combo with emergency weld, UG flashback, or Unburial Rites reanimator.
--> Manabase
I've chosen to go with fetches, surveil duals, fastlands and filterlands.
The use of filter lands is particularly unique and most don't run them, opting for shocks, a second set of fetches, or something else. I've chosen filter lands because they come in untapped and are useful enough for 2 color aggro. In 3 colors, they can be a bit slower as you may not have access to all 3 colors on turn 2, but this is fine for control. As such they are a happy medium between fastlands and any form of tapland. Lastly, these filter lands also add to the pre-modern nostalgia the design is based on.
The cube is all M15 frame with the exception of basic lands and fetch lands. Overall the aesthetics and play of the cube is a mix of old and new. The old frame on basics makes it easy to identify where the lands are.
