Swingy and powerful play makes for super exciting games but also comes with some non-games attached.

Powered cube (originally a carbon copy of the MTGO Vintage Cube in ~2016). I have made many changes since then and am always trying to craft an environment that is balanced between aggro/midrange/control/combo. Midrange is more possible than ever, especially considering the current WotC design philosophy, power creep, and recent printings.

Conspiracies are present and make for a more interesting draft (than not including them), IMO. I believe packs with traditional Power9 cards + Conspiracies like Power Play, Backup Plan, Advantageous Proclamation, etc make for harder draft choices and less, "Ope. I guess I am just snap picking this Mox Pearl."

Cards that rarely see play: Contract from Below, Inzerva, Master of Insights, Impatient Iguana are included here as I believe they either provide interesting effects or their powerlevel aligns with the inclusions of Power9 + Conspiracies.

For testing purposes- I usually do 3x16-card packs for pods of 8. For 6 player pods, I like doing 4x12-card packs.

Broad archetypes:

w

Aggro, think cheap threats like Ocelot Pride paired with hate bear-y effects like Archon of Emeria and/or Spirit of the Labyrinth.

Lots of removal to pair with other colors to get your control on. Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, Wrath of God, etc.

Planeswalkers like Gideon, Ally of Zendikar and The Wandering Emperor.

u

Premium cantrips to smooth out your deck: Opt, Consider, Ponder, Brainstorm, etc.

Lots of permission, hard and taxing varieties: Daze, Force of Will, Counterspell, Jwari Disruption, Spell Pierce, Mana Leak, etc.

OP Power 9 cards: Time Walk & Ancestral Recall.

Creatures with good effects stapled on them: Brazen Borrower, Vendilion Clique, Hullbreacher, etc.

b

Reanimate is the 'best' deck in black. Has most the toys: Entomb, Animate Dead, Dark Ritual, Liliana of the Veil, Griselbrand, etc.

Tutors to make combo decks better: Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, and Imperial Seal.

Classical discard suite in Thoughtseize, Duress, Inquisition of Kozilek, Hymn to Tourach, etc.

A full suite of removal, single target and sweepers: Fatal Push, Infernal Grasp, Damnation, Toxic Deluge, etc.

r

Much like white, a great aggro color. Pair Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, Monastery Swiftspear, and friends with Lightning Bolt effects for a quick kill.

Any of the burn effects pair well with other colors for efficient early removal and reach when you need it.

Goblin Rabblemaster cards pair well with other colors for a quick clock while straying from the pure aggro red decks that want to run the Hired Claws of the world.

Sneak Attack and Through the Breach can be paired with pretty much any color other than white to get your cheaty face on.

g

Classic ramp package with Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Elvish Mystic, and company. Natural Order into a Craterhoof Behemoth and get 'em dead.

If you're looking to play a Lands strategy, green will be your foundation color for that. Titania, Protector of Argoth, Sylvan Safekeeper, Fastbond, Exploration, Ramunap Excavator, and other Lands-centric cards can turn into a very powerful synergy deck while also playing an effective midrange backup plan.

Tireless Tracker, Sylvan Library, and Six green cards pair well with other colors to get your value on.

If you want to play traditional midrange, this is likely the color to be in. Pair it with white for removal, black for disruption/removal, blue for permission, or red for burn.

Green has the classic Channel package to pair with Eldrazi Titans.

w-u Control. Classical control. Hopefully, you feel the tools are there. Classical control has not been a high performer so I am always looking for ways to make it better without neutering aggro.

b-w Pair white aggro creatures with black disruption? Prosper.

r-w If you feel the mono aggro decks are too plain, go for Boros! Take fixing early and often while prioritizing the best cards from both colors! Recent printings make Boros a much better color pair than in years past: Forth Eorlingas! + Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury.

g-w One of my favorite midrange decks. Pair green dorks with the higher MV white banger creatures. Of course, you can't forget Armageddon.

u-b Control, Reanimator, and combo.

u-r Good ole tempo (midrange?) decks with cheap/free counters and red beaters. This is always a fan favorite.

u-g My favorite color pair but not because it's the best, just because I enjoy playing green and blue in the cube. Oko, Thief of Crowns turned my Simic piles into actually reasonable decks.

b-r Aggro disruption. Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer into Thoughtseize and Duress is a good way to make sure your opponents are not having much fun. Rakdos also pairs well for Reanimator with cards like Faithless Looting, Fable of the Mirror-Breaker, and some efficient burn.

b-g Golgari is not super well supported but is one of the better Mind Twist shells. Recurring Nightmare has a nice home here with cards like Survival of the Fittest and Woodfall Primus. The printing of Grist, the Hunger Tide]] makes a drafter want to splash these colors!

g-r Gruul is one of the better midrange decks where you can ramp into an Inferno Titan or go with a lower curve and just jam efficient green dummies with burn spells. There is also good overlap here for a cheat deck: combine Channel, Oath of Druids, and Sneak Attack effects to combo some foolz.

There is no proper Tendrils of Agondy Storm deck in the current iteration of this list. I do not love the parasitic nature of the deck and the slots needed in order to make the deck viable. However, there is Underworld Breach + Brain Freeze + Lion's Eye Diamond which is a proper Storm shell with the benefit of not as many other support cards needed.

That's it for now. Hopefully, you get a chance to jam this with me sometime. I am always looking to play with folks. Whether it's in paper or online, let's try and make it happen. Xmage and Cockatrice are a great way to get some reps in. And I am always looking to fire on those platforms so feel free to reach out if you'd like to play sometime! :)
