What is Cubelet?

Cubelet is a casual format designed by the folks over at LRR, and is a great format for quick pickup games.

  • Supports 2 – 4 players.
  • Pre-built 100 card, singleton shared deck. No lands.
  • If playing multiplayer, multiplayer rules are in effect (1st player will draw on their first turn).
Gameplay
  • Each player starts with 7 life.
  • Each player is dealt an opening hand of 7 cards. There are no mulligans
  • During your turn you may play up to one card from your hand face down. It becomes a rainbow land that taps for one of any color.
  • Players draw from the shared library, there is a shared graveyard and exile zone.
  • Other than that, play the game as normal.
Card Choices
  • 1 Drops only is the theme! Playing with cards that can be cast for 1 mana and no alternative costs or X in part of the casting cost.
  • Keeping the Cubelet very self contained - no card effects that create tokens or counters.
  • Not running effects that check land types (e.g. Wild Nacatl) to keep rules simple.
  • Have avoided burn effects that target players, because it feels too strong for this Cubelet. Two exceptions to this are Vexing Devil and Ebony Charm. Though I would like to see if Grim Lavamancer could work.

All in all the cubelet has been a blast to jam this year, there are a few cards that have felt underwhelming and making some minor adjustments.

  • W: Changed out some removal pieces. Adding Armored Armadillo to try out.
  • U: Swapped out a few cards here to add more card draw.
  • B: Pound for pound, black still has the best 1-drop creatures by a large margin. Added Innocent Blood as another edict to deal with Nimble Mongoose / Scythe Tiger.
  • R: Only change was swapping out Rabbit Battery for Norin, Swift Survivalist to try out.
  • G: A number of under-performing creatures here, adding some utility creatures to round the cube out.
