This "Classic" Cube is one of anthology. It contains at least one card from every set, from Alpha to Aetherdrift!
I've had it for over 20 years as my "main" cube, it has been drafted close to a thousand times, and almost a thousand cuts have been made, with always the same intent: enhance the play experience and increase replayability.
It aims to promote the most interesting draft and gameplay possible, so it is a "fair" cube in its essence, while still allowing strong strategies (reanimator, Tinker, spell chains, lands, etc). Most successes will be found by looking after synergies, rather than raw card power.
I have a "Power Pack" at the ready to add to the cube when we want to spice things up (which happens very rarely). The Power Pack is made of the Power 9, Mana Crypt, Library of Alexandria, Mishra's Workshop, Mana Drain, Mind Twist, The Abyss.
All the cards in this cube are unique, in the sense that I don't run functionnal reprints, as they go against the spirit and intent of the cube, in my opinion. This means that there is one Llanowar Elves (alongside many other options such as Noble Hierarch and Birds of Paradise), but no Fyndhorn Elves nor Elvish Mystic.
Most of the cards that tend to easily win the game on their own are absent from this cube, so don't expect to be drafting an Emrakul (while Griselbrand is in the cube), or see a bunch of hexproof uncounterable creatures. The theme of the games is in-ter-ac-tion. Power plays are all over the place, but you have to work for it!
In the same spirit, to promote an interesting draft experience, monocolored decks are disincentivized by design, as they don't create difficult choices during the draft. For the same purpose, there are lots of cards that are versatile enough so that they can go into different strategies, as having too many archetypal cards in a cube can resume the drafting experience to a boring redistribution of the cards of every archetype.
We play cards as they are printed: the Alpha Orcish Artillery costs 2, the French Rod of Ruin deals 3, and the French Icy Manipulator also untaps!
At the first try, this vedalken craftmanship has proven too oppressive for my cube. It completely blanks attacks and nullifies a large range of decks, I remember why I hadn't included it in the first place.
Thieving Skydiver comes in to give U a piece of artifact removal, which may help UB decks to have access to a good artifact interaction.
