The Aeneid Cube is an homage to the Odyssey block and, much like the Aeneid was to the Odyssey, is an attempt to make the original relevant to today.
The goal is to include as many fun and interesting graveyard synergies as possible. Aiming for a modern take on many mechanics from the Odyssey block and other sets that have similar design space while turning up the power level and really keying in on interaction and tighter games.
I'm aiming to allow players to build various engine type combos (similar to Oketra's Monument and Whitemane Lion) but not true infinite combos. I want players to have to engage with the theme of the cube rather than draft a deck of generically good cards that will win on their own. I want players to "do the thing".
There is a slight overbalance of black as a nod to Torment and because, honestly, black just has the best and most graveyard synergies.
I'm choosing to describe the loose collections or packages of cards as themes rather than archetypes. I feel like this will encourage players to follow their nose and/or potentially find new emergent decks. The themes are very loosely as follows. There are several cards out of these color restrictions as I'm trying to allow the decks to form naturally with the cards I find fun rather than have these archetypes be prescriptive.
: Play it again/Enchantments/Flicker
: Discard and Cycling
: Madness/Sacrifice
: Lands in Graveyard
: Enchantress Aristocrats
: Weenie Aristocrats
: Undergrowth Midrange
: Self-Mill
: Discard and Flashback
: Cycling/Artifact Aristocrats
Additional Decks that may work if everything comes together:
: Spider Spawning
: Goyf Tribal
: Atog Tribal
Aesthetic Notes: I'm trying to have every card in old border where possible but not restricting myself to that.
