Introduction to Ascension

This cube consists of several smaller sets and the tournament structure is a bit different from a normal draft session.

Here is how the tournament works:

  • Each player gets an Evolving Wilds.
  • A normal draft for 8 players using this list. Deck construction.
  • Game 1
  • Each player gains new cards to add to their existing card pool. The new cards are higher power level. Players may sideboard.
  • Game 2.
  • Each player gains new cards to add to their existing card pool. The new cards are higher power level. Players may sideboard.
  • Game 3
  • etc.
  • etc.

Booster packs are seeded. Each pack contains:
2 rares
4 uncommons
8 commons

Restrictions for the starter set (Ascension)
No non-hybrid multicolored cards
No shuffling
No planeswalkers
Low complexity cards

Here is how players gain new cards:

  • 20 cards are given to each player at random from the corresponding level the player is at.
  • 100 cards are placed face up on the table. Lowest ranked player first picks a card. Second lowest ranked player picks a card. etc. etc. until all players have picked. Repeat this full cycle five times. (8x5 = 40 picks total)

Some of the ideas behind this cube is:

  • Everyone are constantly on an even playing field. Your cards get better simultanous with your opponent's.
  • New things are fun. Your deck evolves over time. Each new game is exciting. You might have the same deck with a few upgrades. You might have switches out a lot.
  • The player who got a perfect draft, is rewarded for a brief period of time. But they're not auto-winning the tournament because the new cards everyone will get are of a higher tier than the original perfectly drafted deck.
