Tap to bring the good old, bad old days of Duelist-style errata into the present era.

Rewind to a cozy nightmare realm (or perhaps a paradise?) where grizzly bears, gray ogres, wind drakes, and hill giants are of respectable size for their costs, removal is stronger than creatures, and X-burn was printed at common.

This cube attempts to recreate the feel of a booster draft from earlier in Magic's history, but with no Circles of Protection. It is intentionally low-powered and conducive to complicated board states to remind us of the challenges we faced as new players still learning the game. Most of the cards are commons and uncommons, with a few bombs to mimic the rarity distribution of real packs. Older cards remain relevant, although some newer cards with enemy color pair and graveyard themes have been added. Fixing is moderate. Tribal themes are avoided for clarity.

You and your opponent(s) are the only planeswalkers here.

Important Rules Notice:

  • Damage goes on the stack

  • Mana burn exists

  • Graveyard order matters

  • Kamigawa-era Legend Rule: You may play a legendary card with the same name as a legendary permanent that's already in play. If there is ever more than one copy of a legendary permanent with the same name in play, put them all into their owner's graveyard as a state-based effect. This limit of one copy applies to all legendary permanents with the same name in play, not per player. So, for example, I could have my Vesuvan Doppelganger copy your Teneb, the Harvester and both would go to the graveyard. If I have my Vesuvan Doppelganger copy my own Teneb, the Harvester, both will go to the graveyard. This essentially means effects that create copies can be used as removal for legendary permanents.

  • Paris Mulligan Rule: You can mulligan any starting hand regardless of land content without revealing it to the opponent. Shuffle your hand into your library and draw a new hand. The first mulligan is free, so you'd draw a full 7 cards for your starting hand. For subsequent mulligans, draw one fewer card each time, so the second time you mulligan you'll start with a hand of 6, third mulligan with 5, and so on. No scrying is involved.

Other Rules Mentions:

  • Tokens are owned by the player whose control they came into play under
  • Tapped blockers deal damage
  • Interrupts count as Instants
  • Continuous Artifacts turn off when tapped (Artifact Creatures, Equipment, and artifacts with activated abilities are not Continuous Artifacts)
  • 'Successfully Cast' is different from 'Cast'
  • Dark Ritual can be countered (it's an Instant)

First developed on Cube Tutor. A massive thank you to Cube Cobra for continuing that legacy!

I have put together a paper version of this cube as well (sleeved in Timeshifted Purple!) and it is awesome. Feedback and comments welcome. Have fun drafting!
