Humans... For better of for worse, you and everyone you've really ever had a conversation with is one. Since the dawn of this game, we've been trying to work out exactly why humans should be the most prevalent creature type in the game of magic.
Are we the strongest? No. The smartest? Also, no. Most badass-est? Still, and like all the superlatives to follow, no. However, one of our own created this game and somewhere along the line decided we'd like to see pictures of things that look kind of like us fighting monsters.
This cube delivers on half of that promise. Lots of humans, but they aren't fight monsters, just other humans.
Why // The ChallengeThe other day, I was listening to a channel talking about humans being the most common creature type. This didn't surprise me, but the sheer number did. At the time of the recording, they reported ~3500 humans, with more than ~2300 of them being less than 4 CMC.
That offered a unique opportunity to create an environment centered around lower to the ground creatures, but wanting them still to get the chance for a splashy effect. What is reanimator without a massive target? How much do you need to sink into a human to make them stompy? and other things like that.
For this challenge, I wanted every creature to be human and every artwork to feature a human as the one taking an action or no reference to life at all. This spanned looking at multiple arts to achieve what was needed. Prime example: Rancor.
The ArchetypesThe cube is meant to be drafted in two color combinations, currently using allied color pairings.
Just like an authoritarian dad, these colors are all about saying "no". Whether it is to a creature hitting the field in the first place or attempting to do anything after the fact, you are here to make the rules.
You don't have to pave paradise to know what you have, you just get to treat it like it is worthless by throwing it in your grave, then you can reach out when you need help like the sociopath you are.
Get your paces in for climbing the corporate ladder, by stepping on your own creatures with hobnailed boots. From there, you can rock off some heavy removal with pings all over the place.
You know that time you stood in your bedroom while you were nine arms clutched to the side, trying to become a super Saiyan. You imaged some crazy aura around you and maybe even yelled kamehameha. Don't lie to me. You know the time. Anyway, this strategy is all about channeling your creatures' inner Saiyan to overcome the limits of humanity.
Power in numbers... So, quintessentially human in all fantasy media. Have you ever dreamed of being just a number? Of course not, you get to do that every day, but now your creatures get to do that too. This strategy is a go-to strategy for humans and really was difficult to tune down and make fair for other humans.
More to Creature TypesThere are several cards in this cube that look pretty amazing with all humans, like Gallows at Willow Hill, but there are also other things to consider with creature types. Just because the focus is humans, doesn't mean there aren't some other great ways to meme your friends built in.
