This cube aims to recreate gameplay patters of modern's golden age with synergy driven decks that win by playing to the board. Relive the glory days of iconic cards like Siege Rhino and Jace, the Mind Sculptor or teach opponents why Skullclamp is going to stay on the banlist.
The draft environment is centered around cards that are good on rate, but excel when surrounded by the right support and payoffs. This raises the power floor of decks and highlights cards that work well together. Your goal when drafting this cube should be fair decks with unfair draws. Think control decks with Gifts Ungiven and Unburial Rites, midrange decks with Birthing Pod chains, or aggro decks running Tribal Flames to close out the game. Even if you're not a modern aficionado, drafting good cards in 2 colors will leave you with a strong deck, but if you pay attention to the synergies you will find the hidden gems that take your deck to the next level.
Colors | Main Synergy | Description |
---|---|---|
![]() ![]() | Blink | Chain ETBs to generate tempo and value, or play old school control and win with a Teferi, Hero of Dominaria emblem |
![]() ![]() | Reanimator | Get incidental value by filling your graveyard or go all in and reanimate game ending threats like Griselbrand on the cheap |
![]() ![]() | Rakdos Sac | Use a combination of expendable tokens and creatures to pull ahead and push damage. Red discard and black reanimation pair well for a reanimator back up plan |
![]() ![]() | Lands | Splash trimoes for domain payoffs like Tribal Flames or get extra degenerate with Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle and Field of the Dead |
![]() ![]() | Counters | Hardened Scales makes the deck pop and you know Grobin likes his creatures to pop |
![]() ![]() | Aristocrats | Draft Lingering Souls, Lurrus of the Dream Den, and Skullclamp and don't look back |
![]() ![]() | Token aggro | Go wide, buff your squad, and turn sideways. Or combine the blink and sac elements from each color and build Boat Brew like its 2008 |
![]() ![]() | Prowess | Play your favorite flavor of Steam Vents related shenanigans whether you generally lean towards the Murktide Regent or Monastery Swiftspear side of the spectrum |
![]() ![]() | Value Town | Ramp. Draw cards. Ramp again. Draw again. Find a big brain way to with Eternal Witness loops or just cast a giant Hydroid Krasis |
![]() ![]() | Graveyard | Do degenerate Golgari things with Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis and Birthing Pod, or play fair with Tarmogoyf and the rest of the Boomer Jund cast |
![]() | "Affinity" | Colorless is fully supported as a "6th color", with multiple synergy cards seeded in each color. Monocolor aggro decks pair well with Cranial Plating, and the artifact lands make Mox Opal easy to support with little commitment |
Most multicolor cards are intended as archetype payoffs. If you are lost in the draft a mid to late gold card is a good sign that a particular archetype is open.
Thanks for reading! I'll go over specifics below, but leave you with this: The best p1p1 is the card you've been wanting to play. Taking a Siege Rhino and abusing the etb with blinks and reanimates, casting a Bloodbraid Elf and cascading into Liliana of the Veil, or blind flipping a Delver of Secrets are the plays that made me build the cube in the first place. If you see a card and it sparks an idea for a deck, its probably supported.
