I tried to recreate an environment, where I could simply play a lot of my favorite cards from back in the day and still enjoy fun and interesting games of Magic. I didn't include power 9 cards (besides for obvious financial reasons^^), because I didn't like the one-sided games this lead to (for the same reason there is pracitcally no Manadork, other ramp or card draw). I recently played a bit lot of shandalaar, which ignited my desire to enjoy those old cards.
I wanted the bombs to be:
and of course the amazing multicolored Creatures from Legends:
The Battlebox is meant to be played with the following rules:
Each player starts with four cards in hand - no mulligans possible
Each player receives one of each basic land ()
Each player receives one each of the etb tapped dual lands from Invasion:
The Lands are in exile and can be played as though they where in the players hand. If they become destroyed or removed from the game, they can be put back to the exile zone and can be played again.
In addition to that, there is one rainbow vale, which can be played by any player (just the first one who chooses to play it gets it and it then gets passed around). That way any player can (temporarily) get up to 4 Mana of the same color.
Each player has their own library (for cards like memory lapse), but can't lose the game because there are no more cards left (we've never encountered this, but I guess in the end we'd just reshuffle the graveyards to add cards to the library).
The Library and Graveyard are shared by all players.
I've been inspired by https://www.reddit.com/user/8bit_Mummies/ and https://www.reddit.com/user/Phitt77/ and their work on a oldschool battle box.
I've decided to mainly include cards from 1993/1994 and a couple of cards from later years (mainly Homelands, some Alliances and Ice Age). At first I wanted to only include exclusively cards from Alpha - Fallen Empires but after having played with the battlebox quite a bit I realized, that the lack of removal (even if the additions from Homelands, Alliances and Ice Age aren't that good) really isn't that great for game play purposes. Even though I didn't want to include anything post 1994, I think, that it's for the better and
EDIT (October 2024): I started to include some fun cards like polymorph , Strategy, Schmategy or cards from the Weatherlight block as in my opinion this improves game play vastly :)
