Quick Cube Summary (Date: 31st Dec 2024)
- Size: 660 cards in main cube, expandable with Lore Seeker modules and "Power Up" Module
- Structure: 11 modules with 60 cards each (more details below)
- Power Level: Between Pioneer and Modern
Short Draft Guide
- Use "module marking" as guiding line for "intended archetype" if not sure what to pick
- Many cards are versatile and can be stronger in certain module combinations with overlapping mechanics/themes
- Removal is important and is usually cheaper than threats
- Focus on one archetype and add a "sub-theme" in the same color combination from the other modules avaiable
- Decks are usually 2 colors with the possibility splashing a 3rd or 4th color, BUT fixing is via mana rocks and fetch lands
The Origin Story
In August 2022 I was searching for a cube idea, after having created other cube projects, which were not satisfying to my curator's and tinker's desires. In the never ending expanses I was searching for new, unique but also interesting ways to create a cube, that poses a challenge and allows me to have a proper draft experience with less than 8 players. Eventually I stumbled upon a reddit post which was talking about a modular cube, inspired by another post. After about 8 months and multiple surveys for input, I reached the first version, which was played in April 2023. Since then it has evolved and the experience might have changed, while the vision became more clear. To the point that this overview has a proper structure with content and cube name now (31st December 2024)!
Design Goals and Restrictions
- Synergy and engine-building focused drafting and deckbuilding
- "Fair" and grindy magic gameplay
- Exploring and enabling specific archetypes, which are either underrepresented, not common or with a twist in their respective color combination
- streamlined mechanics (reducing one-of effects) and avoiding "extra material" mechanics such as Dungeon
- No opponent hand discard (you can discard your own though)
- No opponent mill (you can self mill though)
- No "free" spells like Force of Will
Modules required and Pack Distribution (Set-up logistic)
- Pick the required number of modules according to the players (usually Base Module is included, so that is your first module already)
- Shuffle and then split each Module into the number of the total packs required, while making sure that each pack has the guaranteed number of cards from each module
- Distribute as much as possible according to 2) and if there are spare cards, then put those aside as a separate pile (only 8 player pod)
- If there are spare cards (only 8 player pod), shuffle the pile of spare cards and distribute them onto the packs to fill them up to the pack size
- Distribute the created packs to the players
For regular Draft
Players | No. of Modules | Total packs | Pack size | Guaranteed cards per Module | Spare cards per Module |
---|
4 | 3 | 20 | 9 | 3 | 0 |
6 | 5 | 30 | 10 | 2 | 0 |
8 | 6 | 24 | 15 | 2 | 12 (total 72) |
Lore Seeker & Draft Matter variants
- 3 variants how to include Lore Seeker and other Draft Matter cards
- Variant A (one Lore Seeker only): Swap out a single card from the base module pre-shuffle blindly and proceed with setting up packs
- Variant B (one Lore Seeker and Draft Matter cards): Swap out an equal number of cards from the Base Module pre-shuffle blindly with the Lore Seeker and Draft Matter cards and proceed with setting up packs
- Variant C (No. of Lore Seekers equal players): Each player starts the draft with an "unused" Lore Seeker in their card pool. At any given point of time after a pick and before the next pick, players may use their Lore Seeker and add a new pack to the draft. The Lore Seeker of that player has then been used for that draft and cannot be reused or refreshed. Pack size is predetermined according to the table and the packs are created from Lore Seeker specific extra modules
- Modules of the packs can be randomly chosen or determined by the player using Lore Seeker
- If there are multiple packs created by Lore Seekers, then it is up to the playgroup to decide, if one module has to be used up first or if another module may be open up instead
- It is also possible to use "regular" Modules instead of Lore Seeker Modules if the playgroup agrees
Lore Seeker Table
Players | No. of Lore Seekers | Pack size |
---|
4 | 1 | 8 |
4 | 4 | 4 (total 16 extra) |
6 | 1 | 12 |
6 | 6 | 6 (total 36 extra) |
8 | 1 | 16 |
8 | 8 | 8 (total 64 extra) |
"Power Up" Module
- Adds stronger (more efficient) cards to the draft pool
- Includes new mechanics outside of the regular cube pool (e.g. The Monarch)
- Enables 3-4 color decks with Triomes and mana dorks
- Can be used as a replacement for the Base Module
- Can be added as an additional module to the regular set-up -> simply add it to the packs, making the pack size bigger (for 8 players simply remove spare cards from the draft pool)
Module Archetypes Breakdown
- Each module is split between a 2-color and 3-color combination (e.g.

&

in one module)
- Each archetype focuses on a specific mechanic or has a theme
- Some archetypes can have multiple sub-archetypes, especially for 3-color combinations

Commander Draft variant (discontinued)
NOTE: I played it once, but the power level and archetypes were not the best for a commander cube draft, which lead to a very long game with too many board wipes and after reflecting the modules, I decided to remove it completely from the cube. Here are the modules, which were created for it:
