Very few cards from Foundations peeked my interest. I skipped updating the cube for that set. In this update I'm adding a new cheat effect and swapping some green cards.

Consecrated Sphinx -> Flash
A powerful and iconic cheat effect. The creature needs a good death or ETB trigger (Worldspine Wurm, Woodfall Primus, etc). However if achieved, being only 2 mana makes this a very fast cheat effect. Also tutorable with Spellseeker. Consecrated Sphinx is powerful when it works, but blue has other powerful 6 drops and snowball cards.

Garruk Relentless -> Scythecat Cub
This version of Garruk is showing its age. Last draft someone played Garruk and it was very underwhelming. I'm trying out the cub as other cube creators have been impressed with Bristly Bill, Spine Sower. They're very similar but I like the cub slightly more.

Biogenic Ooze -> Elder Gargaroth
Biogenic Ooze is a pet card of mine. I liked using it with things that care about tokens, but it's not the most individually powerful card. I want a big generically powerful 5 drop to go along with the more specialized ones like Deranged Hermit and Plow Under. Elder Gargaroth is certainly a big dumb creature, very painful to play against as aggro.

Titan of Industry -> Vaultborn Tyrant
Very powerful fatty. Works with most cheat effects, including the newly added Flash.
I like Titan but Vaultborn does seem more powerful and their abilities do have some overlap.

Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider -> Nissa, Ascended Animist
I've been wanting to try Nissa for a while. Fits into your curve as a 5, 6, or 7 drop. Demands an immediate answer or will flood the board with huge tokens. Vorinclex was mostly just a 6/6 trample haste. That is good, but wasn't very exciting as a ramp or cheat payoff.

Mainboard Changelist+1, -1

A lot of cards I was considering from this set, but only one card got added.

Mentor of the Meek -> Enduring Innocence
Mentor hasn't been great for a while. It's easy to kill and you have to have extra mana to draw. Enduring Innocence is only once per turn, but not having to pay and being far more resilient I'm hoping will be a better card.

Spectral Procession -> Jacked Rabbit
Pretty strong attacker and token maker. Can fit anywhere on your curve. I would guess it'll most often be cast for 3 or 4, but you can play it on 2 if you don't have anything else or if you have a buff like Luminarch Aspirant. Spectral Procession's mana cost makes it very unlikely to be played anywhere outside of mono white. A pretty generic token maker I think can be replaced.

Reveillark -> Loran of the Third Path
A Reclamation Sage in mono white. Good to blink, also has shenanigans with Karakas and Hullbreacher effects. After I removed the persist combo there isn't really a home for Reveillark. Other cards like Lurrus of the Dream-Den do the same thing but better.

Gonti, Lord of Luxary -> Darkstar Augur
Bob with wings! Offspring giving you 2 bodies is really nice. It works really well with lifegain and topdeck manipulation. Taking out Gonti as while it can be fun to resolve, generally taking cards from your opponent's deck is worse that your own. It's not a bad value card but I'm much more excited for Darkstar Augur.

Headliner Scarlett -> Hired Claw
I wanted to add a red 1 drop back in, specifically a creature. I like this more than the red Savannah Lions variants. The only other lizard in the cube is Mutavault. Even so, it enables itself and the threat of activation is powerful. I know Headliner Scarlett is very good, but I just added Pyrogoyf as a good red 4 drop. It's probably nostalgia talking, but I like Hero of Oxid Ridge and Hellrider more. Scarlett is probably better but I'm sticking with the other two for now.

Abbot of Keral Keep -> Emberheart Challenger
2/2 Prowess Haste is very exciting. Even without many ways to trigger valiant this is a great card. If you activate it just once it's already better than Abbot. Equipment is probably the main way to activate it but there's a few more.

Ash Zealot -> Inti, Seneschal of the Sun
Amazing card I underrated when it came out. Lets you turn cards into extra damage, lands into new cards, and works with other discard effects like Seasoned Pyromancer. The exiled cards can be played until you next turn which means even if you tap out, you can still probably play them next turn. Taking out a 2/2 haste as Emberheart Challenger fills that role. Ash Zealot's mana cost made it only playable in mono red aggro, however Inti is good in any aggro deck.

Sakura-Tribe Elder -> Malevolent Rumble
Impulse for permanents that leaves behind a spawn. Green decks usually play mostly permanents anyway and the spawn token giving you an extra mana is nice. Steve was pretty mid so I'm cutting him.

Tithe Taker -> Ajani, Nacatl Pariah
I'm not as excited as some other people about Ajani, but it still seems good. Need to test to see who's right. It's certainly better than Tithe Taker which was just filler. Two bodies for 2 mana totaling 3/3 worth of stats. The token needs to die first to flip Ajani which can be awkward, but not the end of the world. Ajani does seem pretty good in a sacrifice deck as you can control who dies first and then the planeswalker makes more tokens to sac. Also some extra value in a Boros deck being able to deal damage on the back side.

Charming Prince -> Phelia, Exuberant Shepherd
I like this far more than Charming Prince. It kills tokens, removes a blocker each turn, can also take back your stolen cards, or can blink your own stuff for value. Imagine turn 2 flash this in, turn 3 play Blade Splicer. It's also a cute corgi. The downside is that it must attack to trigger and it doesn't get the counter until after combat.

Hard Evidence -> Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student
First blue 1 drop creature worth playing. Very powerful card. Can make lots of clue tokens, flips into a planeswalker pretty easily. Similar to Hard Evidence but way better. The only downside is that Hard Evidence triggers things like Monastery Mentor, but I'm also including Mishra's Bauble in this update which covers that.

Thirst for Knowledge -> Occult Epiphany
Card I missed from a commander deck awhile ago. Thirst for Knowledge hasn't been very exciting lately. I never put it in nonartifact decks and it's not even that great in them. Occult Epiphany is a better card and works in more archetypes. Discarding an artifact creature and a land makes 3 1/1 fliers and sculpts your hand for 3 mana. It works in reanimator as a looting effect and in tempo decks to make fliers and draw at instant speed.

Graf Reaver -> Emperor of Bones
Cutting a filler zombie because Gravecrawler is no longer in the cube. More and more black removal is able to target planeswalkers now, I don't feel the need for a dedicated hate card. Emperor of Bones is a cheap attacker, graveyard hate, and backup reanimation effect.

Liliana, Death's Majesty -> Archpriest of Shadows
Another zombie card to cut. Not a bad card, but overcosted by FIRE standards. Sometimes used as a five mana reanimate, but I think Archpriest of Shadows is a more interesting version of that effect. You have to have a creature to attack with to get the reanimation immediately but I think that makes it more interesting. Unfortunately only hits your graveyard, but then so did Liliana.

Doom Whisperer -> Crabomination
Crabomination is a 3 for 1 with a fun effect. It is competing with other good black cards and I may replace it in the future, but I want to try it out. I don't know how often emerge from artifact will come up, but it does give it extra value in an artifact deck. Doom Whisperer is a generic beater that I don't mind cutting.

Avalanche Riders -> Pyrogoyf
I personally like Flametongue Kavu more but that doesn't mean I can't play both. Importantly it can go face which is a big upside compared to FTK. I would expect it to usually be a 3/4 by turn 4, but I need to test to really see how good it is. Avalanche Riders was way overdue getting cut, but I really like the card so I kept it in for far too long.

Daretti, Scrap Savant -> Flare of Duplication
Another test card. Excited to try this out with Fireblast. It seems pretty good in a mono red or Izzet deck. In response to removal, you can sac the creature that was already going to die to copy whatever card they were playing.

Zurgo Bellstriker -> Kumano Faces Kakkazan
Swapping 1 drops. Kumano has been good in constructed aggro and I think it's more interesting that Zurgo. You have to wait one extra turn to attack, but you get a lot of extra stuff. It's also a noncreature spell for things like Monastery Swiftspear.

Duskwatch Recruiter -> Springheart Nantuko
Complicated card to parse through. On landfall:

  • If not bestowed, always makes 1/1.
  • If bestowed and you don't pay, make a 1/1.
  • If bestowed and you pay 2, make a copy of the enchanted creature.

It fills the board with 1/1s, synergies with lands, late game you can copy things, bestow gives a bit of board wipe insurance. I never really liked Duskwatch Recruiter, but I like having a couple cheap value generators in green and I think Springheart Nantuko is better.

Jewel Thief -> Sandstorm Salvager
I missed most cards from The Big Score when they came out. I'm very excited about this one. It synergizes with blink, Birthing Pod, Flare of Cultivation, and other sacrifice effects. The activated ability works with token makers like Deranged Hermit and Esika's Chariot. It's also just a good 3 drop in any green deck. Jewel Thief was just filler and I'm happy to take it out.

Cultivate -> Flare of Cultivation
Not a huge swap. The extra green pip could be bad, but I think the upside will come up far more often. There's not a ton of green creatures that are great to sac. The best ones are probably Sandstorm Salvager, Reclamation Sage, anything with Tireless Tracker or Springheart Nantuko out, a mana dork on turn 1 if you're worried about it getting removed and need 3 mana next turn. You can just cast it normally and not worry about losing your creature.

Thief of Sanity -> Psychic Frog
My favorite card from the set. Amazing tempo threat, discard outlet for reanimator, card draw makes it good even in pure control, interesting mindgames of whether or not to discard. All around great card. Cutting Thief of Sanity because frog does what it does but better.

Trygon Predator -> Planar Genesis
Purely filler. Trygon Predator has been in the cube since it's inception and at the time there weren't very many good Simic cards. Now Simic has some pretty good options but most of them are 3 mana. Without fast mana, Trygon doesn't often have many targets except against a dedicated artifact deck. That makes it far too narrow to really be excited about. Planar Genesis isn't anything interesting but an Impulse that can ramp is good in decks with high synergy or combos. Probably will cut this as soon as they print a better card that isn't 3 mana.

Escape to the Wilds -> Bloodbraid Challenger
I love Bloodbraid Elf, but it's not quite good enough at this power level. Extra mana means you can cascade into 4 drops and escape makes it better later in the game. Escape to the Wilds is also a good card. I'm curious to see how this one will do.

Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger -> Cityscape Leveler
Ulamog is great when you hard cast it, but outside of channel that's pretty difficult to do. Exiling the top 20 can just win the game all by itself in grindy matchups, but against fast decks doesn't do anything. Cityscape Leveler isn't the most powerful thing to cheat in, but it is still quite strong. It works with Tinker, Sneak Attack, and green ramp.

Duplicant -> Mishra's Bauble
Mishra's Bauble has a lot of little synergies that make me want to play it. It's amazing in combination with Lurrus of the Dream Den, it's a cheap artifact for things like Tinker and Urza, Lord High Artificer, a noncreature spell for Monastery Mentor and friends, enables delirium if I ever add that. Duplicant was a filler card in an artifact or mono green deck, however Cityscape Leveler should be better in that role.

Forsaken Miner:
Gravecrawler is probably the best recursive creature IF you have enough zombies. Unfortunately there aren't very many zombies that cut it at this power level. This meant very often people would take Gravecrawler early and then simply not see enough zombies to put it in their deck. For this reason I am cutting Gravecrawler even though it is a beloved card and very powerful in the right deck.

In its place I'm adding Forsaken Miner, a new recursive black one drop. Committing crimes should happen pretty frequently as any removal spell trigger its ability. It also combos with Goblin Bombardment and Yawgmoth, Thran Physician letting you pay a b to activate them as many times as you want.

Troll of Khazad-dûm:
There are some zombies that were in the cube over other cards entirely because of Gravecrawler. Now that it's being cut I'm reconsidering some of them such as Cryptbreaker. Its other function is as a discard outlet for reanimator however there are better discard outlets now.

Troll puts itself into the graveyard if you need something to reanimate. It can be counted as a land during deckbuilding due to swampcycling. It can even color fix if you have a black dual land or triome.

Lively Dirge:
Lively Dirge has two modes: 3 mana Entomb or 5 mana Green Sun's Zenith (aka search your deck for Sheoldred, the Apocalypse and put it into play). It may get cut in a future update but excited to see how it plays out in cube. I'm cutting Case of the Stashed Skeleton as it was just a filler card and wasn't too exciting to play.

Slickshot Show-Off:
The card I'm most excited about this update. Great in Izzet spellslinger and mono-red aggro. Dire Fleet Daredevil wasn't a bad card, but its ETB was unreliable as it depended entirely on your opponent's deck. Had to find something to cut and I ended up on this one.

Broadside Bombardiers:
Commander card from a couple sets ago that ended up being one of the best red 3 drops in cube. Ideal in aristocrats or mono-red aggro but good in other decks too. Killing one of their creatures or doing a bunch of damage to face is very powerful. Cutting Phoenix of Ash even though it's a good card, it isn't as powerful and doesn't go into as many archetypes.

Pillage the Bog:
Golgari doesn't have a ton of good options for cube. A lot of them are just removal spells however mono-black removal has gotten pretty good that last couple years. This makes playing things such as Maelstrom Pulse pretty unexciting. Pillage the Bog isn't anything too crazy, however if you're a combo deck or have a powerful effect you want to find every game it can really make your deck better.

Novice Inspector: Taking out the 5th best Savannah Lions variant for a second Thraben Inspector. Good in more decks and even in aggro white has things like equipment and +1/+1 counters that make inspector good.

Lorien Revealed: Cutting Meloku the Clouded Mirror because blue has far better win conditions. Lorien Revealed has the same mana cost when hardcast but primarily counts as a land when building your deck. It can even color fix if you have an island dual land or triome.

Case of the Stashed Skeleton: Heir of Falkenrath was really only a discard outlet for reanimator, because I'm adding Bitter Triumph I'm cutting Heir. The case makes a skeleton token that draws you a Demonic Tutor if it ever dies.

Bitter Triumph: Unconditional removal for 2 mana that can also be a discard outlet for reanimator.

Headliner Scarlett: Recently added Hazoret the Fervent as an extra aggro red 4 drop. Swapping over to Scarlett. Preventing blocks and having haste does a lot of damage and impulse draws if she lives. I don't like the bold text name but at least flavorwise she's universes within.

Archdruid's Charm: I've been trying to take out Beast Within for a few updates, I don't know how it survived this long. Archdruid's Charm is color intensive but green decks tend to be pretty heavily green which make the pips a lot more manageable. Acts as removal, creature or land tutor, or a disenchant. Very versatile, excited for this one.

Unruly Krasis: Big beatstick. Taking out Mystic Snake which I love but isn't really cubable at this power level.

Vraska, Golgari Queen: Reverting this swap. Meren rarely got played. I think Golgari could use another sac outlet which Vraska provides. Generally good value card too.

Currency Converter: Good little value artifact. Filters your draws, makes tokens, discard outlet for reanimator. Taking out Sorcerous Spyglass which is a good card against planeswalkers but usually wasn't too exciting to maindeck.

Portal to Phyrexia: Sometimes when drafting a Tinker deck you'll never see a good target. Adding Portal as a good Tinker target. May want to add another in a future update but I'm unsure what to cut. Taking out Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh because Grixis has enough win conditions and artifact decks probably want Portal more anyway.

I'm still trying to maintain color symmetry in my cube, however Selesnya is not guild with very many cubeable options. Nature's Chant was just filler because there was nothing better. I just learned about Torsten, Founder of Benalia from the current Magic Online cube. It's a big creature, draws cards, and makes bodies when it dies. Works well with Natural Order, Sneak Attack, Reanimate, or splashing white in a green ramp deck.

Mainboard Changelist+1, -1

Negate has been the counterspell I've been least excited to put in my deck. Force of Negation and Spell Pierce are usually better cards that do the same thing. Memory Lapse has impressed me in other formats and has some pretty cool interactions.

Adding Blossoming Tortoise because it works with lands, particularly Strip Mine, Horizon Canopy, and Treetop Village. Thrun, the Last Troll has not impressed me for a while now, and I realized I have 3 other 4 mana 4/4s in the cube so I'm cutting Thrun.

Considering adding back Carnage Tyrant as an uncounterable, hexproof threat, but if I do it will be in a later update.

Malcolm, Alluring Scoundrel: Primarily making this swap so I don't have to deal with day/night anymore. The chorus counters I would consider an additive distraction. A 2/1 flash flyer is different than a 1/1 unblockable obviously. Deals more damage, but sometimes can be blocked. Flash makes it better in tempo decks.

Supreme Will: I've always been a fan of Supreme Will. Confounding Riddle should be a slight upgrade. Counter unless you pay 4 is obviously better than 3. Forbidden Alchemy is better than Impulse in graveyard decks and about the same in other decks.

Deep-Cavern Bat: Being able to take creatures can really mess up your opponent and stop certain combos. Having lifelink also makes the bat better in a race and makes equipment and +1/+1 counters better. Only having 1 toughness does make it more vulnerable to removal, but I think the upside more than makes up for that.

Sentinel of the Nameless City: Solid 3 drop. Wasn't sure what to cut. This attacks and blocks way better than Augur and it only costs a single g. Having coven was also pretty rare on Augur. I'm hoping the map tokens will play out better.

Molten Collapse: Strictly better than Dreadbore. I don't anticipate the second mode coming up very often. Most valuable targets are probably Skullclamp, Bonesplitter, or Wild Growth/Utopia Sprawl.

Recruitment Officer: I replaced this card before ever playing with it. Legion's Landing has not been impressive, and thinking about Cheeky House-Mouse made me want to give Recruitment Officer a chance.

Court of Garenbrig: Monarch card from one of the commander decks. 3 mana monarch card in a color that cares about creatures. I predict this card will be very strong, possibly too strong. I'm worried about the snowball if you play this on turn 2 off a mana dork. If this card proves to be too powerful I might replace it with Court of Bounty which costs an extra mana but also enables cheaty strategies. Taking out Ranger Class because it doesn't do much in a green ramp deck.

The Goose Mother: Overlooked this one at first because I was comparing it to Hydroid Krasis which I think is better in this cube. However it's certainly better than Coiling Oracle which I was only playing as filler. The Goose Mother is always an efficient flyer on rate, draws cards, and gains life when you need it.

Judith, the Scourge Diva: Reverting this change. I wasn't able to get an Ob Nixilis, the Adversary in time for our last draft so we played with Judith still. Someone drafted Jund Aristocrats and went 4-0 with Judith being possibly the best card in their deck. I want to support this strategy so I'm keeping Judith in the cube for now.

Restless Cottage: I want to add more of the manlands from WOE but this was the only one I could justify at the moment. Golgari is often a slow, value color pair and I think could afford to play a tapped manland. I also wanted to add Restless Bivouac but I don't think Boros is as interested in a tapland.

Strongly considering some other cards: Charming Scoundrel, Gruff Triplets, Mosswood Dreadknight

Mainboard Changelist+1, -1

I recently added Sheoldred, the Apocalypse and Orcish Bowmasters which combo with wheels. I wanted to add another wheel and I decided to go with Timetwister. This technically makes the cube no longer unpowered however I don't think this actually changes much. I already run Wheel of Fortune, I don't think adding a blue version of the same card will break things. I also considered Day's Undoing, Echo of Eons, and Diminishing Returns however I decided to go with the OG. I have to proxy the timetwister as I don't currently own one. I don't like proxying a card I don't own, but I think the gameplay will be worth it.

In order to find room for Timetwister, I'm cutting Psionic Blast. Blue decks are almost always paired with another color which has removal. In these decks it's a mediocre removal spell that typically sits the the sideboard. The only color combo that would play it is Simic, however I don't think this will be a huge loss in those decks.

Mainboard Changelist+1, -1

After adding all 10 Triomes I think Field has enough support. It's really good with Golos, Tireless Pilgrim.

Flowering of the White Tree: Should be better than Honor of the Pure. Benefits random legends like Isamaru, Hound of Konda and non-white creatures such as Phyrexian Revoker.

Forth Eorlingas!: Missed this one as it's exclusive to the LOTR commander decks. Very powerful Boros card which excites me. Taking out Boros Reckoner which is one of my favorite creatures but replaceable in W/R aggro.

The One Ring: Overlooked this one during spoiler season but has proven itself in constructed. Draws lots of cards but deals lots of damage to you as well. Works well with cards that can sacrifice it such as Goblin Welder or simply to find your game ending plays/combo pieces. Taking out Mindslaver which is fun to resolve but expensive and rarely taken in draft.

Not too fond of Universe Beyond, but Lord of the Rings is more acceptable than other IPs and I really like the first two cards.

Reprieve: Been hoping for Remand in white for years and LotR finally delivered. Very excited for this one. Taking out Steel Seraph because I'm adding Lurrus which fills the same slot.

Orcish Bowmasters: Really excited to combo this with draw sevens. Along with Sheoldred, the Apocalypse, Dimir wheels should be a real archetype. Seriously considering adding Timetwister (although would have to proxy it). Bowmasters is also good in aristocrats/stax/against blue.

Bloodthirsty Adversary: Reverting a swap. Feldon hasn't been too impressive, but I've seen Bloodthirsty Adversary preform well in MTGO vintage cube videos. Want to try this one out again.

Delighted Halfling: Not too excited about this one, I think it's only marginally better than Avacyn's Pilgrim. The second point of toughness I think is gonna be the most important upgrade, but it can help you splash planeswalkers and other powerful legends.

Lurrus of the Dream-Den: Powerful card that goes into more decks than Gerrard's Verdict. Good in stax, mono-white aggro, black creature decks. Synergizes with Selfless Spirit, Cathar Commando, Mother of Runes, and many more probably. Excited to see what people do with this. Not intended to be companioned, but someone will probably try.

I love the play patterns of this card. Dash it out and keep giving double strike and +1/+1 counters. The double red in Anax made it hard to play outside of mono red even though it's good in Rakdos aristocrats if you can cast it.

I've liked having Baneslayer Angel in my cube but I recently replaced her with Lyra Dawnbringer hoping she'd be better but then they printed Boon-Bringer Valkyrie. Not crazy stronger, but giving one of your creatures a combat bonus the turn she comes down I'm hoping lets the card be useful in more situations.

As this is an unpowered cube, the kicker part of Thieving Skydiver often didn't come up, except against an artifact deck where it felt off that blue got artifact removal. Against other decks it usually was just a 2/1 flyer for 2. Faerie Mastermind on the other hand has flash which makes it possible to hold up interaction and play on your opponent's end step. It also works well with cards that cause your opponent to draw such as Vendilion Clique and is better against other blue decks with lots of card draw. Not a huge fan of the art but at least it pays respects to a real pro player.

Seeing people talk about Pile On caused me to add Lethal Scheme. Hero's Downfall was usually not the best removal but being unconditional and being able to kill planeswalkers meant it was still good in a lot of situations. Lethal Schemes has all those upsides but if you have even a single creature is way better.

Thinking about adding other cards from MOM, but none made the cut for this update.

Adding Hazoret as I've really been wanting to add another red 4 that's good in aggressive decks. Hazoret also works with Wildfire/Burning of Xinye.

Swapping Baneslayer Angel for Lyra Dawnbringer as the cube has more angels so the upside should come up more often.

Swapping Secure the Wastes with Wedding Announcement as a better token maker that's playable in more decks.

Replacing a Savannah Lions variant in white and red with another another one drop to make the one drop slot more interesting.

Trying to find room for Hazoret the Fervent or another red 4 drop, but couldn't find room this update.

Adding Sheoldred, good in most black decks, combos with wheels.

Adding Atraxa as a cheat target. Good in reanimator, sneak, and as a Natural Order target.

Only a single card from ONE in this update, also considering Conduit of Worlds, Sheoldred's Edict, Mercurial Spelldancer.
