Loamcrafter Faun helps Discard out a load, while also helping Lands and Storm with Six. All around perfect card for the cube.
Elvish Visionary is a fantastic card in bounce archetypes, such as Aluren and Intruder Alarm, but has too many 2-drop creatures. Elvish Visionary will be moved to the maybeboard to possibly come back one day
Repeal has been under-preforming in its intended use case of ninjas, and doesn't have as much multi-use as Snap, which has essentially proven the better card here.
Shape Anew returns. I hope to relive the high of hitting Progenitus with Biotransference in play, but realistically an artifact Polymorph is always good.
continues to get better, introducing a better token payoff might incentivize some more
drafting!
Huge shakeup for .
First and foremost, Triomes had to be added for better color support. Addressing the cards removed for the Triomes first, one by one: Creeping Tar Pit is obvious, it was the last man land, and though it still fulfilled its original role, the spot is ultimately more urgently needed as fixing.
City of Brass is almost never drafted, even in 5 color. I don't believe this is the cube for these lands.
Knight of Autumn is a victim of circumstance. A perfectly serviceable card and arguably the wrong cut, just needed space.
Hidden Stockpile is an underpreformer, sad.
Caller of the Claw no longer fits with 's theme, more on that when we get to
's section.
Steelshaper's Gift is almost 100% of the time played to grab Colossus Hammer. The point of Hammertime is to be playable in an deck as a small side package, if a card is being used only for it there must be better options.
Grand Crescendo hurts to see go. It's a very strong card when you have infinite mana, token synergies, or with spell doublers. This is a choice that I may regret in the future, It will go to the maybeboard for now.
Mogg Maniac is serviceable but cuts need to be made.
Same with Archaeomender and Graveshifter.
There are a few additions I made that don't involve 's overhaul, let's get those out of the way first.
Conflagrate is needed to replace mana finishers in spell doubler decks. Super-Duper Death Ray had a good run.
Wizard's Rockets is an incredible card when you either have infinite colorless mana and need infinite colored mana or have infinite mana of one color and need more than one color. Plus it draws and is searchable, insane. Servo Schematic is a very solid card, but is not a unique effect, fellas like Myr Sire do similar things.
Now for the meat & potatoes. has felt underwhelming for a long while. It is hard to balance a color like
in an environment like mine. I do not want big creatures, but I want big mana. I do not want big board wipes, but I want wide boards. I do not want tribes, but I want dorks. After a long and tedious process, ultimately the best solution seemed to be expand on the archetypes already available in the cube and don't give
a super unique identity. Sad, but there are plenty of unique and flavorful interactions that play out in the new
. I decided to expand on discard, graveyard, storm, lands, and the
enchantments. No additions here should be surprising and no expulsions should be surprising, either, given the parameters. A lot of thought went into an ultimately simple change, but I believe sometimes the simple changes are the best.
In a cube full of combo enablers and synergy pieces, Abstruse Appropriation doesn't have the big baddies to grab that it normally would. Vindicate ends up playing the same role for 1 less.
While doing the landfall changes, it upset me that Knight of the Reliquary, one of my favorite cards, had such a low play rate. I believe with the new changes to landfall the cube can support a Field of the Dead package, and shouldn't need 2 Prismatic Vistas anyway.
Additions:
Worldsoul's Rage provides great redundancy in the landfall colors plus adds extra utility.
Academy Rector is fantastic for decks reliant on a single enchantment as its main combo enabler, such as Food Chain, Intruder Alarm, Survival of the Fittest, Aluren, and the rest. This mostly benefits , which is good,
can always use it.
Dour Port-Mage is crazy in Ninjas and Intruder Alarm / Lonis, Cryptozoologist / any other deck that uses Shrieking Drake type effects.
Iridescent Vinelasher may not be in landfall colors, but being in tutor colors it's easy enough to splash, plus having double fetches there's enough incidental synergy for it to work standalone.
Warren Soultrader is an excellent value engine in any token deck, especially one that benefits from extra mana, such as Chatterfang, Squirrel General.
Organ Harvest reads a little funny but boils down to being an efficient way to sacrifice eggs for aristocrats as well as gain mana for combos. Incredible card, incredible I Love Lucy reference.
In a similar vein, Rain of Filth joins the fray as a little more landfall support in . Hopefully this will help nudge Iridescent Vinelasher.
Shorikai, Genesis Engine can do so many things, but is focusing on being a mana sink and blink target here. The draw is incredible for blink decks and will be thoroughly appreciated, plus it being an artifact helps tremendously with synergy elsewhere.
Deductions:
Mimic Vat never found its home, aggro was too fast, combo was too piece reliant, and control was too slow.
Flash is an incredibly powerful card and has some game ending interactions in the cube, such as Craterhoof Behemoth, however its traditional use case is stilted a bit by a lack of one card combos by the cube's design. From where Flash is kneeling it must seem like an 18 carat run of bad luck. Truth is, the game was rigged from the start.
Ashling, Flame Dancer is unfortunately too win-more with all the spell doubling and even in storm.
Dance of the Manse is a solid card, but being multicolor hurts it and its effect isn't unique. Back to the maybeboard.
Cling to Dust had some fringe use cases, especially with Insidious Roots, however its escape costs never felt correct and it doesn't come up enough to be a strong enough card. Maybe in the future when there's more graveyard shenanigans that are on a higher power level.
Osgir, the Reconstructor is an example of a card that looks amazing but doesn't play out the way you want it to. His second ability is sweet, he has vigilance, you can use it in main two, it's so good! I's way too slow for the kind of deck you want to play it in, and unfortunately no one drafts him anymore. RIP.
Fierce Empath is such a linear tutor that it is often cut for not having any targets. It's sick when it grabs Craterhoof Behemoth, though.
Late to Dinner is great recursion and synergizes with lots of cards, however room has to be made. Very sad day.
5 Color lands haven't seen much play and I want to see if the cube's power level can support Tolarian Academy yet
MH3 added some interesting cards that opened some new lanes I had previously been interested in, but didn't quite have the correct support for, or adequate surrounding power level to support in the cube.
First, let's go over the biggest change, the addition of a full on storm package. Storm has always been a minor part of the cube, mainly because it tends to be pretty oppressive if fully supported. Here, I've toned it down quite a bit, so all should be good. We have the High Tide package for storm count and mana generation, being High Tide to generate mana, Turnabout for even more mana, Mind's Desire to finish, and Great Whale instead of Palinchron, 1. because I already had it, and 2. because it makes storm that much weaker. Six from MH3 is what started the entire storm thought process, because it allows storm to operate in much easier, so why not allow it to operate easier in general?
For , I've decided to add a handful of spell doublers in Bonus Round, Krark, the Thumbless, and Dualcaster Mage. Almost all of these are capable of more than just doubling spells, but their main draw is storm support.
is still mostly tokens, but could move to more spellslingers in the future, the core is already there. Ashling, Flame Dancer is very helpful for setting up big turns in both

Abstruse Appropriation slots in as a direct upgrade over Vindicate. And about time, too. Also in /
, Wernog, Rider's Chaplain gets replaced by Hidden Stockpile. Wernog, Rider's Chaplain didn't see much play, and Hidden Stockpile will slot into any

artifact or sacrifice deck.
For miscellaneous changes, Sakashima's Student is being swapped for Ninja of the Deep Hours. Most of the creature copiers are being removed, they are underperforming. Insidious Roots is a personal recent favorite, I believe there is enough discard and recursion to make it work, and it makes Tortured Existence much better. Ineffable Blessing comes in. Generally name 2 and it's an extra draw per creature. Oswald Fiddlebender is an artifact Birthing Pod, doesn't have a great identity yet but hopefully this will help push it. Shape Anew and Mad Ratter are both cut but still good enough, so back to the maybeboard they go. Long one, but hopefully should improve the cube a bunch!
After a quick glance at MH3, these are the standouts. I still have to look over the commander decks, however here are the most interesting ones among the selected:
Six looks incredible for tying together 's storm package, allowing you to replay Lion's Eye Diamond from your graveyard as well as helping with the landfall strategy and Vengevine decks as well.
Abstruse Appropriation looks like the long anticipated replacement to Vindicate. Abstruse Appropriation reads like Fractured Identity a bit to me, hopefully not as oppressive.
Flare of Malice seems like really solid repeatable forced sacrifices in a recursive deck, like Gravecrawler or Nether Traitor types. Might be too much, we'll see.
Vexing Bauble should be a great way to stop the elementals that are left in the cube, as well as some other 0 mana spells, like the forces. At worst, it's another 1 mana artifact cantrip, which is great for this cube.
Waiting for MH3 before I make any more changes
Myr Battlesphere being present caused some issues with Tinker, making some games end too quickly, and making Tinker play in and unintended way for this cube. Waker of Waves will be a good cantrip, decent reanimation target for Living Death, and also relevantly will remain a 7 drop for Birthing Pod.
has been long overdue for a bit of a makeover. I wasn't happy with the play-patterns and needed to spice up some of the combos, so here's what's new;
Sorry Feasting Troll King, it was fun while it lasted
will be getting an overhaul in the upcoming days, I'm not satisfied with how it is currently playing
Curse of the Fire Penguin is just worse than Blast From the Past, who knew!
Become Immense was slotted in to take advantage of the large amounts of discard available, however going wide has been better than going tall. Tough Cookie has been stellar, it pushes through enough damage for aggro and has enough value for midrange.
Dread Fugue is great, but Dreams of Steel and Oil is exactly what this cube wants.
Blast From the Past is still decent, but I find myself mostly cycling it and using cheaper removal. Tolarian Winds is sorely missed in
as a consistent discard outlet, and makes its return.
Damnation is not being cut for power level, it is very powerful, however I feel like there is too much mass removal, and I want to give white something sort of "unique". Bone Shards is exactly what I want in removal, targeted but with a "downside" that can be taken advantage of.
has too many 4 drops, and Skyway Robber is the clunkiest of the bunch. Samwise Gamgee is the food payoff the archetype needs to thrive, hopefully it won't be too overbearing.
